Whole House Water Filters

Whole house water filters will remove small particles from the water supply. These filters can be installed in both home private well water systems and municipalities. Utility companies may have to be contacted before installing any filters on their systems. Filters can be installed before the pressure tank for water treatment. Most whole house water filters will operate under certain pressure ranges. Consult the manufacturers for these pressure capacities.

Items:
Hacksaw

Black marker
Pipe threader

Whole house water filter housing

One
Remove all electrical power from the water pump. Drain the water system to relieve any internal water pressure. Cut the water line or piping with the hacksaw in the location for the new water filter. Use the tape measure and mark the pipe so the appropriate distance is allowed for the installation of the water filter housing. Cut the pipe again at the marked location.

Two
Use the pipe threader and install new pipe threads on the cut pipe. Plastic pipe will only have to be refitted with the correct adaptors for the filter housing. Use the approved pipe glue for installation. Install a pipe union on one side of the water piping this will allow for easy installation of the filter housing. Cover all male threads with two or three rounds of the Teflon tape.

Three
Install any pipe adaptors inside the filter housings internal female pipe fittings. Typically the filter housing will be threaded to accept 1-inch diameter pipe. You may have to install pipe adaptors to reduce down the size of your individual plumbing arrangement. Install the filter housing with the pipe wrench.

Four
Install the filter element inside the housing. Reapply power to the water pump. Re-pressurize the water system. Open the water faucets to remove any trapped air in the water system.

Words to the Wise:
Some filter manufacturers may recommend a by pass valve arrangement around the water filter. Consult their specifications for installation.

The filter must be installed in an area where it cannot freeze.

A pressure regulator may have to be installed between the pump and the water filter. Excessive pressures can damage the water filter. Follow the manufacturers recommendations for upper limit pressure restrictions.
